  • Sienna ~ toy poodle

    Sienna

Age: 2 yrs | Breed: Toy Poodle | Weight: 14 lbs

Sienna came into our care in May of 2023 shortly after she had been purchased off Craigslist. Her owners saw an add and met someone in a park where they handed over Sienna. No records, no past history, nothing.

After a few weeks, they realized the thumping noises they were hearing at night was Sienna’s head hitting the floor as she was having grand mal seizures. They took Sienna to the vet and she was started on medication but due to her owner’s work schedule, it was difficult to get her meds in on time. She continued to have grand mal seizures and began to decline. After another trip to the vet it was recommended that she follow up with a specialty hospital. It was going to be financially difficult to pursue further medical help so they reached out to another rescue who wasn’t able to take Sienna in and contacted us to help.

Here’s where we begin…. When Sienna’s foster mother picked her up, she was exhibiting seizure activity and had been according to her owner for over a week. She drove straight to the emergency hospital where she spent the next 48 hours until she was stabilized enough to do an exam. Her liver levels were off the chart and it was determined that she might have a liver shunt. She was started on medication and once she was strong enough and seizure free for two weeks she underwent surgery to repair her liver shunt. That’s it, right?? No…. Unfortunately we learned that having a liver shunt repaired doesn’t automatically “fix” the problem and seizure activity may continue. In Sienna's case, it did continued.

Sienna sees a Neurologist and it's recommended that she have an MRI and a C-Scan. Sadly we find out that she has brain damage from her non-stop seizure activity. While the surgery to repair the liver shunt fixed the original problem (blood circulating to her brain) the damage from two years of toxins flowing to her brain and the seizures was permanent. What do we do?? The neurologist said there is no repairing the damage to her brain BUT if we can get the seizure activity under control, Sienna will enjoy a quality life.

So here we are now… Sienna hasn’t had a seizure in over a month. She takes two medications twice a day (a.m. and p.m.) and she’s a happy girl. Sienna loves to eat and her favorite time is ANY TIME someone is in the kitchen!

Sienna is special. She doesn’t realize what’s happening in her world. She takes her meds like champ because she LOVES food! She can walk on a leash but prefers to do her business in the fenced yard. She does her best to make it outside but she will have accidents in the house. She has some very stylish belly bands and is good about wearing them.

Sienna is fine with people and other animals. Due to her innocent nature, she doesn’t understand not approaching an aggressive dog so a home with pleasant dogs is must.

Sienna is adorable. She’s wonderful for the groomer and she’s curious and gentle with everyone she meets. If you’re special enough for her, please fill out an application to be considered.

To get Sienna properly diagnosed and to the stable place where she is now, we dug deep into our bank account. Her medical bills totaled over $19,000. She’s in a good place now thanks to the care she’s received. If you’re unable to adopt but would like to help PRNE so we can continued to help dogs in need, please consider making a donation. https://www.poodlerescuene.org/donations

  • Daniel - Special Needs

Age: 7-8 years| Size: Toy | Male Special Needs

Daniel’s ready to find his forever home now!

Daniel was left outside of an abandoned shelter one night when the temperatures were below freezing. He spent the next several days trying to stay warm and safe before some kind of people were able to trap him and take him to a shelter. We’ll never know what happened to Daniel but we’re grateful to the people who reached out to us to see if we could help him and give Daniel a chance.

What we’ve been able to figure out since Daniel came to us is that he was born malformed and has learned to use his legs as they are to get around. We’ve taken Daniel to see a neurologist and an orthopedic and both feel that any attempt to correct them surgically now would entail several surgeries and the likelihood of a positive outcome would be slim to none, causing Daniel much discomfort for nothing. However, Daniel doesn’t know there’s anything wrong with him and tries to walk with everyone else although we limit him to a block or two at the most. He goes down the steps to his back yard but coming up is too much for him so his foster mother carefully carries him up.

Sadly, we’ve surmised that Daniel was badly abused. He will bite when he feels unsafe and his temper tantrums scream fear. It’s very sad to see. He’s mistrusting people he doesn’t know and takes a long time to allow those he does know to handle him. We feel he truly wants to trust people and with enough time, patience, and understanding we hope he can learn to trust again.

Daniel is looking for a very special home. A home with one or two adults only. He would prefer a quiet home and one without other pets would be ideal. Daniel’s new family needs to understand that he comes with baggage and will take some time to adjust to his new surroundings. Daniel has limitations given his back legs and hips. He manages extremely well but if you’re looking for someone to go for long walks and hikes, it won’t be him. He loves to go in the car and sit in his secure car seat. He would probably enjoy a stroller if you have one. Daniel is content wandering around his yard sniffing and doing his business so a fenced yard is preferred.

Daniel craves attention but he’s tricky. He won’t be the dog who’s going to cuddle with you on the sofa or snuggle with you in bed. He will be your best friend in a dog bed at your feet and beside your bed and he’ll thrive. Anything too much for him and he’ll react. We want to make sure his new family understands his limitations and is able to provide for his needs and accept him for who he is. Daniel has a very patient and understanding groomer who’s done a remarkable job with him. Daniel’s new family will have to have a groomer who’s well established and is comfortable working with dogs with attitude.

Daniel has a lot to offer ONCE he feels secure. If you think you’re able to provide for his needs, please submit an application. We will be contacting those we feel might be a match. Potential applicants will be required to meet Daniel in his foster home (1/2 hour south of Albany in NY) and then have a few visits before an adoption will take place.
